A Top Intelligence Official Warns About TikTok’s Potential Impact On U.S. Residents.

Truth Puke’s take: Paul Nakasone, director of the U.S. National Security Agency, has expressed alarm over the data that Chinese-owned TikTok may be gathering on its users and its potential impact on American youngsters. The White House issued an order last month mandating the removal of TikTok from all federal devices and networks within 30 days, with exceptions for national security, law enforcement, and security research purposes. Senators Mark Warner (D-Va.) and John Thune (R-S.D.) led a bipartisan group of 12 senators in presenting legislation to strengthen the federal government’s authority in order to prohibit TikTok and other foreign-owned corporations from functioning in the United States. The bill, also known as the Restricting the Emergence of Security Threats that Endanger Information and Communications Technology (RESTRICT) Act, would expand the Commerce Department’s authority to review and prevent information communications and technology transactions from tech companies owned by six hostile foreign nations: China, Russia, North Korea, Iran, Cuba, and Venezuela.
Senator Thune and Senator Warner are working together to develop a comprehensive strategy to address the vulnerabilities presented by technological platforms such as TikTok. This bipartisan proposal would safeguard the security of customer data and the nation’s communications technology infrastructure. TikTok denies that its user data and information can be accessed by the Chinese government or that its content may be altered, and claims that it saves U.S. user data on servers located outside of China. A spokesperson for TikTok told Reuters that the business has been collaborating with the United States government to resolve national security issues. On March 23, Chief Executive Officer of TikTok Shou Zi Chew is scheduled to appear before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on the app’s privacy and data security standards, as well as its influence on minors.
