AI’s Dark Side: Geoffrey Hinton Quits Google And Sounds Alarm

Geoffrey Hinton, a pioneer in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and a Turing Award winner, has recently left Google, where he had been working for a decade, and expressed concerns about the potential dangers that his life’s work may present to humanity. Hinton was instrumental in the development of generative AI programs, which have formed the basis of AI software such as ChatGPT and Google Bard. However, Hinton has warned that this technology may pose a risk to society and humanity, with “bad actors” harnessing it for nefarious purposes.

In an interview with the New York Times, Hinton stated his motivation for leaving Google was so he could speak without oversight about technology that he now views as a danger to mankind.

Hinton’s concerns are shared by many in the tech sector, with public-facing chatbots like ChatGPT and Google Bard being seen by some as potential threats to the spread of online misinformation and their impact on employment. The latest version of ChatGPT, released in March by San Francisco’s OpenAI, prompted over 1,000 tech-sector leaders, including Elon Musk, to sign an open letter highlighting the “profound risks” that the technology poses to society and humanity.

While Hinton believes that Google has acted “very responsibly” in its stewardship of artificial intelligence, he believes that the technology’s proprietors may inevitably lose control. He warns that this could lead to a scenario where false information, photos, and videos are indistinguishable from real information, and people will no longer know “what is true anymore.”

Hinton’s warning is a reminder of the potential risks of the AI arms race in Silicon Valley and the need for responsible development and deployment of AI technology. The fact that even one of the founding fathers of AI, Geoffrey Hinton, has resigned from Google and voiced his concerns about the technology’s potential to pose a danger to humanity is a clear indication that we need to take the issue seriously. As AI continues to develop and spread into every aspect of our lives, it is crucial that we consider the potential risks and find a proactive way to prevent any harm.
