Arrests In Secret Police Station for Chinese Government in NYC

TRUTH PUKE’S TAKE: Two US citizens were arrested for their role in establishing a secret police station in New York City on behalf of the Chinese government. The arrests were part of a series of prosecutions by the Justice Department aimed at disrupting Chinese government efforts to locate and suppress pro-democracy activists and others who are openly critical of Beijing’s policies. The police station performed some basic services such as renewing Chinese driver’s licenses but also had a more “sinister” function, including helping the Chinese government locate a pro-democracy activist living in California.

In a separate scheme, the Justice Department charged 34 officers in the Chinese Ministry of Public Security with creating and using fake social media accounts to harass dissidents abroad. The defendants also used social media to spread Chinese government propaganda and recruit US citizens to act as Chinese agents. Eight Chinese government officials were charged with directing an employee of a US telecommunications company to remove Chinese dissidents from the company’s platform.

These cases are part of a larger effort to combat “transnational repression” by foreign governments targeting dissidents in the US.
