TRUTH PUKE’S TAKE: German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has warned China against military escalation in the Taiwan Strait, stating that it would have disastrous consequences for the world. She called for a peaceful resolution of conflicts and said that a unilateral and violent change in the status quo would not be acceptable to Europe.
This statement follows French President Emmanuel Macron’s controversial comments, casting doubt over whether Europe would help the US if Beijing invaded Taiwan. The EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, also called for restraint on the Taiwan issue and urged Beijing to pursue peacemaking efforts, under certain conditions.
At a press conference with Baerbock, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang told reporters that Taiwan is China’s, and that national unity is a core interest of citizens on both sides of the strait. The press conference also saw the two foreign ministers clash over human rights and trade issues, and Qin urged Germany to act reasonably and avoid historical tragedies, which could be interpreted as a thinly veiled threat to Berlin.
