A group of high school students in New York recently volunteered to restore the gravestones of hundreds of veterans at Mount Calvary Cemetery in the western part of the state.
This happened in honor of Memorial Day last week, but itโs an important story so we wanted to feature it.
The United States of America would be better off as a country if more young people were encouraged to take part in activities like this one, which not only reinforces respect for the people who died defending our nation, but also teaches our countryโs history.

High schoolers lead grassroots movement to restore 500 veteran graves in honor of Memorial Day
Memorial Day is Americaโs holiday to honor the brave men and women who lost their lives serving in the military. And one group of high schoolers in Cheektowaga, New York, located in the western part of the state, is doing their part to make sure the fallen veterans are recognized on the special holiday.
In honor of Memorial Day weekend, a group of high school students and community volunteers gathered to restore and raise veteran grave markers at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Led by community member Paul Mueller, it is the second year the group has come together. โHigh school students uncovered and raised about 500 forgotten veteran grave markers at Mount Calvary Cemetery for Memorial Day!โ news station WKBW captioned the video.
โYou know, a lot of these people sacrificed so much. To see the memorials and not even be able to see the names on them, itโs kind of depressing,โ one high school student shared with WKBWโฆ
Mueller added, โTo see these young kids giving back, theyโre reading the names on the stones. Itโs really great.โ Another student also shared, โIt will be kind of cool to walk by and be able to say, โI helped do thatโ.โ

Mr. Mueller, who put this effort together, should consider trying to make this a national program. It would be a great thing for the whole country.
