On the eve of the Democratic National Convention, former Biden insiders openly criticize Vice President Harris’s tenure, citing her handling of immigration, inflation, and the Afghanistan withdrawal as key failures.
On the eve of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, tensions within Team Biden have surfaced, with criticism directed at Vice President Kamala Harris’s performance. Ron Klain, President Biden’s former chief of staff, admitted on Sunday that Vice President Harris fell short in her role.
During Harris’s tenure as vice president, the country faced a surge in migrant crossings, inflation driven by massive spending, and the controversial and deadly withdrawal from Afghanistan. Harris was reportedly the last person to speak with President Biden before the decision to withdraw from Afghanistan and was a key figure in addressing the migration crisis and inflation.
“We were all united behind the idea she should be successful. We just didn’t find the path to do it,” Klain acknowledged in an interview with the New York Times. He emphasized the challenges of loyalty, dedication, and focus on the mission.
Jeffrey Zients, Biden’s current chief of staff and co-chair of the Biden-Harris transition team, noted that Harris was heavily involved in the administration’s decision-making process. “The president’s first directive to me was the vice president must be involved in every decision that hits his desk, from start to finish,” Zients stated.
Some Democrats have suggested that Harris’s struggles were partly due to the steep learning curve she faced in her role. Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC), a Biden ally, pointed out, “She had a learning curve as vice president like Joe Biden had a learning curve as vice president. They didn’t give her time to learn or room to grow… That was the problem.”
Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) expressed his concerns about Harris’s ability to manage the border crisis, stating, “I don’t want to say I told you so, but it did happen the way I said it would happen.”
