Canadian Snap Elections Confirmed for April 28th โ€“ All Parties Begin Campaigning Against the Background of an Impending Trade War With the US

Canadian candidates: NPD Singh, Liberal Carney and Conservative Poilievre.

As it was expected, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called a snap election for 28 April, trying to capitalize on the recent surge of his Liberal party in the polls.

This liberal rise came in the runup of the controversy over Donald J. Trumpโ€™s comments about Canadaโ€™s exceedingly high tariffs on US products.

Trump eventually said that if Canada canโ€™t survive without massive subsides from the US, then they should become the 51st state โ€“ and all hell broke loose in the Canadian political landscape.

Former banker Carney says he needs โ€˜a clear mandateโ€™ to deal with Trump, saying the US president โ€˜wants to break us so America will own usโ€™.

For months on end, Poilievreโ€™s Conservatives held a big lead in the polls over Trudeauโ€™s Liberals โ€“ but that has changed.

BBC reported:

โ€œEarlier, the Conservative Partyโ€™s Pierre Poilievre laid out his own campaign pitch โ€“ saying he would approach the US as a โ€˜respectful and firm and strongโ€™ leaderโ€

This election will be held against the background of an impending trade war between Canada and its biggest trade partner the US.

โ€œCarney, leader of the Liberal Party, will face competition from Pierre Poilievre, Jagmeet Singh โ€“ leader of the New Democratic Party, and Yves-Franรงois Blanchet โ€“ leader of the Bloc Quรฉbรฉcoisโ€

โ€œOh Canada!โ€ โ€“ President Trump trolled former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

โ€œThe Liberals and the Conservatives are essentially tied in the polls ahead of the expected election call today.

According to CBCโ€™s Poll Tracker, which averages multiple surveys, the Liberals are at 37.5% and the Conservatives at 37.1%, both nationally.โ€

CBC reported:

โ€œLiberal Leader Mark Carney revealed he would introduce a middle-class tax cut that could affect up to 22 million Canadians. โ€˜Negativity wonโ€™t win a trade warโ€™, he said in a shot at Tory Leader Pierre Poilievre during his first speech.

Speaking earlier in Quebec, Poilievre unveiled his โ€˜Canada First, For a Changeโ€™, campaign slogan. Poilievre said a โ€˜lost Liberal decadeโ€™ has left Canada weak and vulnerable on the world stage.โ€
