Chief Justice Roberts Takes Another Veiled Shot at Trump, Says Verbal Attacks Against Judges Can Lead to Violence


Supreme Court Justice Roberts once again took a veiled shot at Trump and said attacks against judge can lead to violence.

This is the fourth time that Roberts has publicly rebuked Trump in recent months.

Roberts didnโ€™t call out Trump by name but he decried ad hominem attacks against justices.

The Chief Justice made the latest remarks on Saturday during an appearance at a judicial conference.

Politico reported:

Chief Justice John Roberts issued another warning Saturday that heated political rhetoric aimed at judges can spur physical threats and violence.

โ€œIf you have somebody whoโ€™s expressing a high degree of hostility to the court, on whatever basis โ€ฆ the danger, of course, is somebody might pick up on that. And we have had, of course, serious threats of violence and murder of judges just simply for doing their work,โ€ Roberts said during an appearance at a judicial conference.

He spoke the day after the Supreme Court issued its final opinions of the term, but he did not discuss any of the courtโ€™s rulings.

Since President Donald Trump returned to office in January, he has mounted withering attacks on federal judges who have blocked his executive orders and other policies on mass deportation, government funding cuts and ending diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. He has blasted some judges as Communists and even called for their impeachment.

However, speaking to an audience of judges and attorneys, Roberts did not mention Trump by name. And while the chief justice said heโ€™s been prompted to issue public statements against such verbal attacks, he emphasized that he has done so in response to comments from both Republican and Democratic officials.

Roberts also rebuked President Trump last month during a fireside chat in New York.

Speaking at a fireside chat to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the US District Court for the Western District of New York, Justice Roberts lashed out at Trump for his calls to impeach radical judges.

โ€œWell, Iโ€™ve already spoken to that and, you know, impeachment is not how you register disagreement with decisions,โ€ Roberts said in front of hundreds of judges and lawyers.

โ€œThe judiciary is a co-equal branch of government, separate from the others, with the authority to interpret the Constitution as law and strike down, obviously, acts of Congress or acts of the president,โ€ he said.

โ€œIts job is to obviously decide cases, but in the course of that, check the excesses of Congress or of the executive, and that does require degree of independence,โ€ Roberts added.

Roberts spoke on the โ€˜independenceโ€™ of the judiciary.

โ€œIn our Constitution, judges and the judiciary is a co-equal branch of government, separate from the others with the authority to interpret the Constitution as law and strike down, obviously, acts of Congress or acts of, of the president. and that innovation doesnโ€™t work if itโ€™s not the judiciary is not independent,โ€ Roberts said.

In March Chief Justice Roberts said Trump call for impeaching judges is โ€œnot an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision.โ€

โ€œFor more than two centuries, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision. The normal appellate review process exists for that purpose,โ€ Roberts said in a rare statement earlier this year.
