Debt Default Looms: House Democrats Seek Republican Help

TRUTH PUKE’S TAKE: House Democrats are taking measures to ensure that Congress has another option to avert a looming historic debt default. As President Joe Biden rejects the House Republicans’ demand for deep spending cuts, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-NY, announced that they are preparing a Plan B to raise the federal borrowing limit without any strings attached.

The special rule, filed by Massachusetts Rep. Jim McGovern, would allow a clean bipartisan debt ceiling bill to be brought to the floor without the support of Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., and his leadership team. However, to pass the lower chamber, the bill would need support from all Democrats and some rank-and-file House Republicans. In addition, it would require approval from at least 60 senators to defeat a GOP filibuster.

While the Democrats aim to “preserve an important option,” they are aware that Republicans hold the power to block the effort if they are unified. Senate Republicans argued that the only way out of the crisis is for President Biden and Speaker McCarthy to negotiate.
