Many have said that Romania is the place where European democracy went to die after the Liberal-Globalist establishment and the judiciary did the unthinkable, canceling the first round of elections due to unproven allegations of a Russian influence operation in social media platforms.
Subsequently, the powers that be went even further, barring absolute favorite Calin Georgescu from running in the May re-elections.
But Romania does seem to have greater resilience than we imagined because, after all that, another right-wing candidate is leading the opinion polls.
George Simion is the leader of Romaniaโs second-largest party, and just became the candidate the right-wingers are congregating around, after ally Anamaria Gavrila withdrew from the race yesterday (19) to support him.

Reuters reported:
โโWe decided to support the one who has the most chances (of winning)โ, she said in a joint video with Simion posted on their social media accounts. โWe must go beyond parties and, as Mr. Georgescu said, we must support this movement by giving it all the chancesโ.โ
Simion turned his party from an anti-vaccination group during the COVID pandemic into Romaniaโs leading opposition force.
โโToday, more than ever, Romania needs the unity of its national forcesโ, Simion said on social media.โ
Simion, banned from entering Ukraine, demands that Kiev show greater respect to the Romanian ethnic minority, their schools and churches.
The Telegraph reported:
โโWe helped a lot with the Ukrainian war efforts, with money, with guns, with cyber and with humanitarian aidโ, he said. He said the training of soldiers under the defense treaty โcan continue for defensive missions only if Ukraine learns how to behave and to respect the rights of the 500,000 Romanian speakers in Ukraine โ meaning respecting their right to have schools, respecting Romanian churches, and meaning that Ukrainians do not behave in Soviet style like their cousins the Russiansโ.
He added: โThey should learn also respect and they should learn to give a little back. This didnโt happen even after we supported Ukraine quite a lot, and the population in Romania is not happy with thisโ.โ

โWith polls currently putting him in the lead for the first round of the election rerun, Mr. Simion is looking to unite the hard-Right, a task which will not be easy.โ
He also supports a re-unification of Romania with Moldova.
โโWe will not demand territoriesโ, he said, adding: โSo yes, I want to unite with the Republic of Moldova, but only if the Republic of Moldova will want it. I cannot go with guns and bombs and tanks in Putin-style, in Stalin and Hitler-style.โ
