Double Standards: Biden’s Sex Assault Accuser Calls Out Media Hypocrisy on Trump’s Sex Lawsuit

Former President Donald Trump has been ordered by a New York civil court to pay $5 million to journalist E. Jean Carroll for sexual assault and defamation charges. Tara Reade, a former Senate aide to Joe Biden, accused the media of hypocrisy for accepting Carroll’s allegations against Trump while dismissing her own against Biden. In 2020, she alleged that in 1993, Mr. Biden pinned her to a wall in a Senate building, reached under her clothing and penetrated her with his fingers.

Reade believes her allegations were suppressed because they did not suit the media’s narrative. She further criticized the partisan attitude towards serious criminal complaints, stressing that sexual violence is not about political affiliation. Reade believes this attitude would discourage women from reporting sexual harassment, abuse, and rape.

Reade stated that the mainstream media had a goal of making sure Joe Biden was elected in 2020, which she believed influenced their coverage of sexual assault allegations. While she did not comment on the merits of Carroll’s lawsuit against Trump, Reade believes it sets a precedent and is part of a broader campaign against the former president. “Overall there’s been a will for the political death of Donald Trump. They’ve been trying to get him down in some way, somehow, every way for years,” she said. “This sets a precedent in some ways. And so the Democrats and the ‘me too’ crowd you see crowing over the verdict, they’re ignoring me. And that shows you the hypocrisy.”

Reade believes that the selective echoing or dismissing of allegations based on the political affiliation of the accused is ugly and damaging and would only put women off reporting sexual violence. She urged for sexual violence to not be politicized in this way but taken seriously regardless of who the accused is.

The controversy surrounding Tara Reade’s accusations against Joe Biden, and the contrasting coverage with E. Jean Carroll’s case highlights the need for impartiality in the media’s reporting.
