Elon Musk Applauds China’s AI Potential At World Conference

Tech magnate Elon Musk delivered an address at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, where he expressed admiration for the people of China and their potential in the field of AI. Speaking via video link, Musk highlighted the Chinese people’s wisdom and determination, stating that they have the capability to excel in artificial intelligence if they choose to do so.

Musk commented, “I think, really, China is going to be great at anything it puts its mind into. That includes many different sectors – sectors of the economy, but also artificial intelligence.”

However, he emphasized the importance of regulatory oversight in the AI field, particularly regarding artificial general intelligence (AGI) or deep intelligence. Musk expressed concern about AGI surpassing human capabilities and urged caution in its development.

While Musk did not directly address the US-led restrictions on semiconductor exports and cloud computing services to China, Hong Kong-based newspapers highlighted the potential impact of such measures on Beijing’s AI development efforts. These restrictions could pose challenges to China’s progress in the AI sector.

The World Artificial Intelligence Conference, sponsored by prominent Chinese companies like Alibaba, Huawei, and SenseTime, commenced this week in Shanghai. Despite ongoing trade tensions, delegates from major US tech firms, including Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft, were reportedly expected to attend the event to discuss various topics, such as robotics, large language models, blockchain, and the metaverse.

As the trade war between China and the United States continues, the US’s efforts to undermine China’s high-tech sector through sanctions and export restrictions add a layer of complexity to the conference and the overall AI landscape.
