Florida Would Extend “Don’t Say Gay” To 12th Grade.

Truth Puke’s Takeaway: On January 28, the DeSantis administration may make it illegal for all public-school teachers to talk about sexual orientation or gender identity in the classroom. Florida’s law for 2022 says that teachers in kindergarten through third grade can’t talk to their students about sensitive topics like their sexual orientation or gender identity. If this extension were passed, it would mark an expansion of this restriction. The largest LGBTQ advocacy organization in Florida views the proposed regulation as part of an “unsettling trend” where Florida’s Republican leaders seek to “use every lever of government” to censor conversations about LGBTQ people. Opponents of the legislation have said it seeks to marginalize LGBTQ individuals and that they should be written off of society. Senator Shevrin Jones (D-West Park) expressed her opposition to the proposed measure as it seeks to “ban books, muzzle teachers, and force students back into the closet.” Rep. Erin Grall (R-Vero Beach) lamented that society and schools were “pushing these adult themes down to children,” saying they should instead focus on helping pupils improve academically.

Senator Yarborough disagreed and pointed out that the bill was needed because the education department found that “shocking and deeply troubling” books were being taught in public schools. State Board rule would alter Florida’s “principles of professional conduct” for public school teachers to prohibit teaching about sexual orientation or gender identity to students in grades 4 through 12, unless it was part of a required class required by academic standards or a health course that parents could opt out of having their children take. In October, the State Board passed a regulation amendment for instructors of K–3 students that was opposed by homosexual and transgender people. Equality Florida will speak out against this proposed regulation and has already used State Board regulations to further its agenda.
