TRUTH PUKE’S TAKE: The Republicans are increasingly pushing for military action to tackle the fentanyl crisis, with some advocating for the use of special forces and cyber warfare against cartel leaders.
Legislation has been introduced seeking authorization for the use of military force to “put us at war with the cartels,” and some lawmakers want to label cartels as foreign terrorist organizations. This approach is supported by some GOP presidential hopefuls, who view the cartels as a threat to the US similar to ISIS.
However, not all Republican leaders are in favor of military intervention, with some seeing it as ineffective or having negative implications for bilateral relations with Mexico.
Meanwhile, Democrats reject the proposals and hope to address the issue through expanding law enforcement authorities and regulation.
Nevertheless, should a Republican win the presidency in 2024, such ideas could become policy, particularly if Donald Trump, the current GOP frontrunner, regains office.
