Actor James Ransone, known for roles on HBO hit shows, died at age 46 this past Friday in Los Angeles.
LA County Medical Examiner said that his death was ruled a suicide.
Ransone was married and had two children. Jamie McPhee, his wife, put a fundraiser on social media to benefit the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
James Ransone, who played Ziggy Sobotka in “The Wire” and a host of other HBO roles has died. He was 46.
Ransone died by suicide in LA on Friday, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.
He was a married father of two, and wife Jamie McPhee posted a fundraiser for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in her social media profile.
“Ransone’s cause of death was listed as “hanging,” while his place of death was listed as “shed.” His body is ready for release, the LA County Medical Examiner’s records stated.” New York Post reported.
One of Ransone’s known roles was in the HBO series “The Wire,” which had its original run from 2002 to 2008. He was on the show in 2003 for 12 episodes, playing the role of “Ziggy,” a dock worker in Baltimore.
Ransone also appeared in shows including “Bosch,” and “Generation Kill.” His last TV role was in an episode of the TV show “Poker Face,” which aired this past June.
Ransone also was a film actor. He starred in movies including “Prom Night,” “Tangerine,” “Mr. Right,” and “The Black Phone.”
Ransone had also struggled with an alcohol and heroin addiction which he said was brought on by the trauma of being a survivor of sexual abuse when he was younger. He had accused a tutor from his childhood of the abuse.
The State Attorney’s office in Baltimore County did not pursue charges against the accused after the police investigation was complete according to The Baltimore Sun.
It took him until about age 27, in 2006, until he became sober. His heroin addiction lasted about five years, according to a 2016 interview.
