JUST IN: One Dead After Boat Explosion on Hudson River During Fleet Week


One worker is dead after a boat explosion on the Hudson River during New York’s Fleet Week on Saturday.

A 59-year-old welder was thrown into the river after a small explosion on a barge.

According to the Daily Mail, the explosion was “caused by methane igniting in a welding malfunction.”

The Daily Mail reported:

A worker was killed after he was thrown into the Hudson River in New York City by an explosion on a barge.

The barge blew up at the North River Wastewater Treatment Plant near West 138th Street in Manhattan about 10.30am on Saturday.

The small explosion was is believed to have been caused by methane igniting in a welding ‘malfunction’ on the vessel, but it did not start a fire.

One of the workers, a 59-year-old man who was welding the hull on the barge during the explosion, later died of his injuries, according to authorities.

Rescue boats rushed to the area to rescue him after he was thrown overboard and pinned between the boat and the dock.

Whether he died from the explosion or from being thrown into the water is yet to be determined.
