Matt Taibbi Threatened with Jail Over Twitter Files Reporting

TRUTH PUKE’S TAKE: Matt Taibbi, an independent journalist, could face imprisonment as a senior Democrat accused him of providing false testimony to lawmakers about the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) in his reporting on the Twitter Files. Del. Stacey Plaskett, D-V.I., ranking member of the House Judiciary Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, sent a letter to Taibbi demanding that he correct his mistake.

Taibbi had made a specific reference to CISA, which is a government entity, when he meant to refer to CIS, a private organization, in his reporting on the Twitter Files. Plaskett argues that this error had serious implications, as it implied that CISA was working with the Election Integrity Partnership (EIP) to have posts removed from social media. Plaskett cited Taibbi’s Truth in Testimony form, which certifies that he understands that knowingly providing material false information is punishable by up to five years’ imprisonment under the federal perjury statute.

However, Taibbi subsequently corrected the error in his reporting, and Lee Fang, another reporter on the Twitter Files, confirmed that the specific comments Taibbi told Congress and that Plaskett cited “were correct” despite the original error in his reporting. Fang also noted that the EIP listed CISA as one of its major government stakeholders, and argued that the error was not a crucial one that undercuts the significance of Taibbi’s reporting on the government’s influence over Twitter.

Plaskett had previously had a contentious exchange with Taibbi at a hearing, referring to him as a “so-called journalist” and demanding that he reveal his source for his Twitter Files reporting, who she suspected was Twitter owner Elon Musk.
