Truth Pukes take: House Republicans attempted to shift the focus away from Tucker Carlson’s riot revisionism by celebrating an unexpected victory on a bill rolling back progressive D.C. crime rules and planning their reaction to the White House budget. However, Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s decision to allow Carlson access to thousands of hours of Capitol footage from the riot has cast a shadow over his own leadership team, which has been pressed repeatedly about the move as Carlson continues to downplay the violence of the siege by supporters of former President Donald Trump. Senate Republicans, led by Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, slammed Carlson’s portrayal of the brawl on Tuesday, and Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) believes the focus on Carlson’s portrayal is more of a media phenomenon.
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and his leadership team are scheduled to conduct a second news conference later Wednesday, focused on President Joe Biden’s budget announcement. However, not everyone in the group is willing to let it go. Oversight Committee Chair James Comer and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene are attempting to organize a congressional delegation to visit those imprisoned for suspected offenses on Jan. 6. Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.) recently obtained approval from the speaker to provide alleged Jan. 6 rioters access to Capitol Police video footage held by the House Republicans. While some House Republicans openly questioned McCarthy’s decision to release the film to Carlson, none named McCarthy by name, and all pointed to the clips seen on Fox News to suggest that the Jan. 6 select committee only gave one side of the violence. Carlson indicated on his show that he had no influence from the speaker’s office or his own Fox higher-ups before airing his piece.
