Michelle Obama Says She Was Shocked That People Hated Her School Lunch Program โ€” Claims it Was Because of Partisanship

Michelle Obama said during a podcast appearance on Thursday that she was shocked by how unpopular her school lunch program was and blamed it on partisanship instead of the awful meals with poor servings.

Obamaโ€™s school lunch program, officially part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act (HHFKA), was signed into law in 2010. It was nearly universally hated for the gross meals it served to students.

The former first lady discussed the program during an interview with Kylie Kelceโ€™s โ€œNot Gonna Lieโ€ podcast, released Thursday.

โ€œI was trying to be strategic about aligning my agenda with something that was important to the West Wing and I thought, โ€˜Thereโ€™s no way that anyone is going to take issue with trying to make school lunches healthier, getting kids more active,โ€™โ€ Obama said.

โ€œJust trying to make the next generation healthier than ours and, boy, was I wrong, which is really interesting in these times with the current Secretary of Health and Human Services [Robert F. Kennedy Jr.] who is now saying some of the same things that I was saying,โ€ she continued.

Obama complained about people accusing her of trying to be a โ€œnanny state.โ€

โ€œIt became a partisan issue. People were telling me that Iโ€™m trying to be the โ€˜nanny state,โ€™ and Iโ€™m trying to control what our kids are eating and telling them whatโ€™s good for them and whatโ€™s not good for them,โ€ Obama said.

A 2014 National School Boards Association survey found that 83% of districts reported student dissatisfaction, with many kids tossing the healthier options straight into the trash.

Still, somehow, Obama thinks her program was ultimately good.

โ€œEventually, we got a lot done. You know, we were able to improve the nutrition standards, the labels so that they were more readable, so that peopleโ€™s parents could really understand the breakdown of fat and sugar, and it was clear we got the school nutrition standards improved in our schools for the first time in like 50 years. There hadnโ€™t been any updates,โ€ Obama said.

President Donald Trump rolled back the program in 2020 during his first administration.

โ€œThis announcement is the result of years of feedback from students, schools and food service experts about the challenges they are facing in meeting the final regulations for school meals,โ€ then-Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said in a statement at the time.
