In a fiery clash on Fox News, host Martha MacCallum went head-to-head with Democrat Senator Chris Coons in a must-watch segment that exposed the Leftโs complete detachment from fiscal realityโand their blatant indifference toward the impending collapse of Social Security.
The segment, originally intended to address a damning new report uncovering widespread fraud and waste in the Social Security Administration, quickly unraveled as Senator Coons did what Democrats do best: deflect, distract, and defend dysfunction.
When confronted by MacCallum about shocking statistics from whistleblowers and oversight panels exposing mismanagement within Social Security, Coons smugly dismissed the findings.
Sen. Coons:
Martha, not only do I not believe some of what was just shared there, but the Trump administrationโs acting administrator of Social Security has said that less than one-tenth of one percent of the payments put out by the Social Security Administration are fraudulent or in error. Letโs be clear about some of the things that were just played. There are people whose names are on the rolls as having been born 150 or 200 years ago. Theyโre not receiving Social Security payments. So the statement that thereโs all these peopleโฆ
As MacCallum repeatedly tried to ask simple, pointed questionsโlike what the Biden administration has actually done to combat Social Security fraudโCoons pivoted into a bizarre tirade about Elon Musk and even accused Musk of trying to โget into the systemsโ because he once compared Social Security to a Ponzi scheme.
Martha MacCallum:
Sir, you sound like youโre pretty okay with all the agencies and how they function. You say all those millions of people depend on Social Security, so you donโt care about the ones that are going to never get it because itโs going to be insolvent in 10 years. What have Democrats done? What did Joe Bidenโs administration do to find the waste, fraud, and abuse in Social Security to try to shore up this important agency? What did they do? Can you tell me?Sen. Coons:
Sure. First, Martha, you are presuming widespread waste, fraud, and abuse in Social Security. You havenโt offered any credible evidence to support that. I donโt believe what Doge says about virtually any federal agency, but I will believe what the GAO says or the Inspector General, or the Administrator of Social Security.Martha MacCallum:
Why? Can I ask you why?Sen. Coons:
Because Iโve had senior folks from DOGE lie to my face about other federal agencies where they claim they have found widespread waste, fraud, and abuse, where previous audits did not find that waste or abuse. This administration, Martha, fired the Inspector General of USAID when he filed complaints about the waste of huge amounts of food aid left rotting on docks. Rather than dealing with that fraud, they fired him.Martha MacCallum:
Iโm amazed byโฆ Youโre saying that Iโm assuming that thereโs waste, fraud, and abuse. I think itโs equally surprising that you are assuming that the government is functioning in an efficient way when we all knowโSen. Coons:
Thatโs not what I said.Sen. Coons:
Martha, there are Inspectors General in every single agency that are there to find waste, fraud, and abuse.Martha MacCallum:
Oh, I know. Theyโve done a fantastic bang-up job. When you look at the numberโSen. Coons:
To start the administration by firing all of them does not suggest a deep interest in listening to these career, non-partisan Inspectors General about waste.Martha MacCallum:
No, you canโt just put your fingers in your ear and go โblah, blah, blahโitโs not happening.โ We all know that the government is not well run. The government is not well run.Sen. Coons:
Thatโs not at all what Iโm doing, Martha. Let me repeat the point.Sen. Coons:
If Elon Musk says that Social Security is a Ponzi scheme, and this president has fired the relevant Inspectors Generalโwho are the people most capableโnot a bunch of 20-year-old software engineers with no previous government experienceโฆMartha MacCallum:
They are most capable. These peopleโdid you watch this interview, Senator? Did you watch the interview? Did you watch this? Did you watch the interview?Sen. Coons:
Which interview?Martha MacCallum:
The one I just played you from.Sen. Coons:
I donโt know what youโre talking about. You are yelling too much.Martha MacCallum:
No, I canโt because I canโt get a word in edgewise. Iโm trying to ask you a question. Thatโs my job.

In the middle of the interview, Coons smugly declared:
โI donโt believe what DOGE says about virtually any federal agency, but I will believe what the GAO says or the Inspector General, or the Administrator of Social Security.โ
Well, guess what, Senatorโthe GAO (Government Accountability Office) has reported that our federal government loses up to $521 billion every year to fraud.
Thatโs more than half a trillion dollarsโgone. Wasted. Stolen. Year after year.
And yet, Democrats like Chris Coons are still putting their fingers in their ears, defending the bureaucracy, and attacking the messengers.
According to GAOโs report in 2024:
No area of the federal government is immune to fraud. We estimated that the federal government could lose between $233 billion and $521 billion annually to fraud.
Given the scope of this problem, a government-wide approach is required to address it. The Office of Management and Budget, working with agencies and the oversight community, should develop guidance to improve fraud-related dataโproviding a more uniform approach to what data is collected and how.
Also, Treasury should identify methods to expand government-wide estimates of fraudโprioritizing higher-risk program areas.
