Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) flamed Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (NY) for caving on the spending bill and called on Democrat Senators to vote against the stopgap bill.
Pelosi said, โDemocrat Senators should listen to the women,โ and she urged them to defy Schumer.
โDemocratic senators should listen to the women. Appropriations leaders Rosa DeLauro and Patty Murray have eloquently presented the case that we must have a better choice: a four-week funding extension to keep government open and negotiate a bipartisan agreement,โ Pelosi said in a remarkable statement.
โAmerica has experienced a Trump shutdown before โ but this damaging legislation only makes matters worse. Democrats must not buy into this false choice. We must fight back for a better way. Listen to the women, For The People,โ she said.
Pelosi lashed out at President Trump and Elon Musk as she praised House Democrats for voting against the spending bill.
โDonald Trump and Elon Musk have offered the Congress a false choice between a government shutdown or a blank check that makes a devastating assault on the well-being of working families across America. Letโs be clear: neither is a good option for the American people. But this false choice that some are buying instead of fighting is unacceptable. I salute Leader Hakeem Jeffries for his courageous rejection of this false choice, and I am proud of my colleagues in the House Democratic Caucus for their overwhelming vote against this bill.โ
Chuck Schumer came under fire on Thursday after he caved and announced he would vote for the House-passed spending bill.
A desperate Schumer on Thursday night called Republicans โbastardsโ live on air during an interview with MSNBCโs Chris Hayes as he tried to justice his decision to cave.
โThe only people they โ the only thing they understand is meeting conflict with conflict. So if you look at Doug Ford in Ontario, who banged the table and said, โYouโre gonna tariff us? Iโm gonna tariff you, weโre gonna put a surcharge on electricity,โ โ thatโs the only thing that gets their attention. The only thing that gets them to back down is meeting conflict with conflict. If you meet conflict with essentially managed retreat or strategic non engagement, then they roll all over you!โ MSNBCโs Chris Hayes said to Schumer.
Schumer chimed in: โNo, Chris, we are going to conflict with them on everything โ on the tax cuts for the billionaires. Theyโve become a plutocracy. An oligarchy. On Medicaid, we have plans to conflict them with all of that. If the shutdown occurred we wouldnโt be able to do that because they would fill up both the Senate and the discussion on whether we should cut this and not cut that of things that they want to cut.โ
Chuck Schumer called Republicans โbastardsโ and then tried to โapologize.โ
โSo to have the conflict on the best grounds we have summed up in a sentence that theyโre making the middle-class pay for tax cuts for billionaires, Itโs much, much better not to be in the middle of a shutdown which could divert people from the number one issue we have against these bastards! โ Sorry, these people,โ Schumer said.
