Political Prank During Texas Transgender Debate

A public hearing on a bill targeting doctors offering gender-affirming treatment to trans youths in Texas took an unexpected turn when an anonymous prankster submitted several suggestive fake names ( Connie Lingus, Anita Dickenmee and Holden Middick 不不不) for public comment. The Texas House Committee on Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence was temporarily derailed as the committee chair called out clearly fake names for public comment, causing the room to erupt in laughter. While the Republican presiding over the public testimony period, Jeff Leach, welcomed the prank and stated that it’s good to know people can still laugh and smile together, lawmakers in Texas have been proposing a growing wave of anti-LGBT and anti-transgender bills that often target trans youths. These bills aim to restrict access to gender-affirming care, bathrooms, and school sports teams, and include SB8, an education bill that would ban discussions over sexual orientation and gender identity in schools. Another anti-trans bill, SB 1029, would ban public funding for “gender modifications and treatments” and increase legal liability for health professionals providing gender-affirming care.
