Poll: Majority of Republicans Favor Trump as 2024 Presidential Candidate

Amid his legal drama, former President Donald Trump is leading Florida Governor Ron DeSantis by his largest-ever margin. According to a YahooNews/YouGov poll, Trump’s lead over DeSantis has more than tripled in under two weeks. In a hypothetical one-on-one electoral contest, Trump leads DeSantis by 26 points, with 57% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents supporting him.

The poll surveyed 1,089 US adults in the 24 hours after a New York grand jury handed down the indictment against Trump. It found that 54% of Republican respondents confirmed Trump was their pick of any candidate for the race, with just 33% saying they wanted someone else to run. This marks a significant boost for Trump from the last Yahoo/YouGov poll, which had the ex-president leading the governor by just eight points.

While 40% of respondents admitted Trump would be a weaker candidate than he had been in 2020, few seemed to think the indictment was responsible for that weakness. Only 30% felt it would hurt him in the 2024 campaign, while 27% said it made no difference and 24% actually thought it made him a stronger candidate. Despite this legal drama, Trump’s “favorable” and “unfavorable” ratings remain equal to those of current president Joe Biden.

The charges against Trump reportedly pertain to his alleged hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels seven years ago. While the charges remain under seal until Tuesday, they have not affected Trump’s popularity among his supporters, with most Republicans backing him as their preferred candidate for the 2024 presidential nomination. It remains to be seen how the legal drama will affect his campaign if he decides to run for president again.
