Pornhub Takes A Stand: Blocks Utah Residents In Protest Against Age-Verification Law

Pornhub, one of the largest adult content websites on the internet, has taken a bold stand by blocking access to its site for residents of Utah. The move is a protest against a new law requiring stricter age-verification measures, which is set to come into effect on May 3. Visitors from Utah noticed the block on Monday and were met with a message from Pornhub explaining the reason for the block.

“As you may know, your elected officials in Utah are requiring us to verify your age before allowing you access to our website,” the message read. “While safety and compliance are at the forefront of our mission, giving your ID card every time you want to visit an adult platform is not the most effective solution for protecting our users, and in fact, will put children and your privacy at risk.”

The site insisted that it already had robust trust and safety measures in place to prevent children from accessing its adult content, and that the measures being required by the state of Utah had no proper enforcement. As a result, it has made the difficult decision to completely disable access to its website in Utah until a “real solution” is offered.

The law in question, Senate Bill 287, requires adult content websites to use age-verification systems before granting access to visitors. However, there is currently no clear way to comply with the law, and many adult websites have chosen to block all visitors from Utah rather than risk non-compliance. The bill is similar to one passed by Louisiana’s state legislature.

Sen. Todd Weiler, R-Woods Cross, who sponsored SB287, believes that Pornhub could comply with the law, citing that the site is already complying with Louisiana’s law, which is essentially the same. However, Pornhub has insisted that until a “real solution” is offered, it will continue to block Utah visitors.

The move by Pornhub is a dramatic one, and is sure to spark further debate around online privacy and protection for children. It remains to be seen whether other adult content websites will follow in Pornhub’s footsteps, or if Utah lawmakers will respond to the site’s message and offer a different solution.
