Proud Boys Leaders Convicted Of Seditious Conspiracy For Capitol Riot Plot

In a controversial trial that lasted nearly four months, four members of the Proud Boys, including its former leader, Enrique Tarrio, were convicted of seditious conspiracy, with charges of up to 20 years in prison. The charges stem from their alleged involvement in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, where they were accused of plotting to attack the Capitol building in a failed bid to block Congress from certifying President Joe Biden’s election victory.

While the convictions were a victory for the U.S. Justice Department, many supporters of the Proud Boys argue that they were unfairly targeted. In comparison, they point out, the violence committed by Black Lives Matter protesters during the summer of 2020 was far more widespread and destructive, yet few were held accountable.

The Proud Boys have always maintained that they were not planning to attack the Capitol, but were simply exercising their right to protest. Their defense lawyers argued that Donald Trump himself had urged protesters to descend on the Capitol, and that their clients were merely following the former President’s instructions.

Despite the defense’s arguments, the jury found the defendants guilty of obstructing an official proceeding, conspiring to impede Congress from performing its duties, and obstructing law enforcement during a civil disorder, among other crimes.

The convictions have left many on both sides of the political spectrum deeply divided. Some see them as a victory for justice, while others view them as a violation of the Proud Boys’ constitutional rights. Whatever one’s opinion, it is clear that the fallout from the Capitol riot will continue to reverberate for years to come, as the country struggles to come to terms with its deep political divisions.
