A group of isolated researchers has been stranded for months on end in the most inhospitable environment โ until one of the team members goes rogue, sexually harassing and eventually threatening to kill a female colleague.
That could be the plot of a successful thriller or horror film. Still, unfortunately, this is reportedly whatโs happening in real life to a group of South African scientists trapped in the tiny Sanae IV base in Antarctica.
The story broke in the outer world because a member of the research station sent out an email to a major newspaper pleading for rescue after watching a team member threatening to kill a colleague.
The situation appears even more dire as the researchers in the Sanae IV base are isolated in the icy Antarctic wastelands for at least 10 more months.
The extreme weather in the South Pole makes coming and going nearly impossible.

Daily Mail reported:
โLast week, one of the isolated researchers sent a worrying email in which they claimed one of their number had attacked them and was issuing further threats. The group were living in fear of the man who posed a threat to the entire team, the researcher wrote. The team member was also accused of sexually assaulting one of his colleagues.
The author of the email, which was shared with South Africaโs Sunday Times, wrote: โRegrettably, his behavior has escalated to a point that is deeply disturbing. Specifically, he physically assaulted [X], which is a grave violation of personal safety and workplace norms. Furthermore, he threatened to kill [X], creating an environment of fear and intimidationโ.โ

โโI remain deeply concerned about my own safety, constantly wondering if I might become the next victimโ.โ
The unnamed email author is greatly concerned over the colleagueโs โincreasingly egregious behavior.โ They called for immediate action to ensure the safety of the team.
โโI am experiencing significant difficulty in feeling secure in his presence,โ the email continued.โ
South Africaโs environment minister Dion George will personally contact the team to assess the situation.
โThere was a verbal altercation between the team leader and this person. Then it escalated and then that person did physically assault the leader. You can imagine what itโs like. It is close quarters and people do get cabin fever. It can be very disorientating.โ
