Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) has removed over one million people from the state’s voter rolls, intensifying efforts to crack down on ineligible voters and safeguard the integrity of the November 2024 presidential election.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) has overseen the removal of over one million people from the state’s voter rolls as part of an effort to prevent ineligible individuals, including non-citizens, from voting in the upcoming November 5, 2024 presidential election.
According to *Newsweek*, the removal of 1.1 million names includes those who have moved out of state, passed away, or are non-U.S. citizens. This action is part of a broader effort to uphold the integrity of elections following the signing of Senate Bill 1 (SB 1) in September 2021, a law designed to enhance voter scrutiny. The initiative aligns with a larger trend in Republican-led states focused on tightening election rules after the contentious 2020 presidential race.
Among those purged from the voter rolls are over 6,500 noncitizens, more than 6,000 individuals with felony convictions, over 457,000 deceased persons, and nearly 463,000 voters on the suspense list. Additionally, more than 134,000 voters who confirmed their change of address and 65,000 who failed to respond to official notices have also been removed. Over 19,000 individuals voluntarily canceled their registrations.
Abbott emphasized the importance of preserving election integrity, stating: “The Secretary of State and county voter registrars have an ongoing legal responsibility to maintain the accuracy of voter rolls, remove ineligible voters, and refer suspected illegal voting to the Attorney General’s Office for investigation and prosecution. Illegal voting in Texas will never be tolerated.”
This move comes in the wake of Abbott’s previous remarks in June highlighting instances of voter fraud, particularly in Houston. Citing a judge’s decision to invalidate over 1,400 votes in a 2022 district court election, Abbott reiterated his position that voter fraud is a real issue that undermines trust in elections.
The court ruling followed a legal challenge by Republican candidate Tami Pierce, who contested her narrow defeat to Democratic Judge DaSean Jones in the 180th District Court race, where Jones won by a margin of just 449 votes.
