In 2024, libertarian support for President Trump and the Republicans surged after Trump pledged to free Ross Ulbricht.
Ulbricht was seen by many as wrongfully prosecuted for enabling online commerce to be settled in Bitcoin.
The Libertarian Party has been broadcasting for months that Roger Ver might be their new Ross Ulbricht for the midterms.
โThe Libertarian Party remains dedicated to fighting for justice & individual liberty, including advocating for the release of political prisoner Roger Ver,โ the Libertarian Party said on Friday. โKnown as โBitcoin Jesus,โ Roger has been a trailblazer for economic freedom through cryptocurrency.โ

In another post, the Libertarian Party wrote, โRoger Ver is facing life in prison for revealing how the US government worked secretly to subvert cryptocurrency and prevent economic freedom. More people should hear this story.โ

Ver is facing 109 years in prison after being arrested in Spain for charges filed by the Biden administration. He was arrested in April 2024 for mail fraud, tax evasion, and filing false tax returns, and is being held for possible extradition to the U.S.
Over 10 years ago, Ver already went to great lengths to pay the IRS for his Bitcoin holdings at the time. He has argued that the IRS is retroactively applying new tax rules to his 2014 Bitcoin sales, which he sold as a non-U.S. citizen living abroad, and that the charges stem from an overreach by the U.S. government.
โI have always tried to pay what the law requires. This isnโt about taxes,โ Ver wrote on Twitter in March. โIโve always known Iโd be targeted politically for spreading cryptocurrency and voluntaryist ideals.โ
The DOJ prosecution of Ver, initiated under the Biden administration, is proving to be deeply unpopular with libertarians.
โRoger Ver is a political prisoner,โ the popular libertarian account wrote on Twitter. โThe DOJ and IRS are not โreallyโ after him for tax issues. They certainly did not raid his attorneyโs office and want him sentenced for 109 years for THAT. What the establishment wants is simply for Roger, like President Trump and others, to shut up, bow down, and be a lesson for all of us who dare to challenge their authority. The lawfare must stop.โ
โA good way for @realDonaldTrump to show that heโs serious about ending the governmentโs war on Bitcoin is to free @rogerkver,โ said Spike Cohen, the 2020 Libertarian Party candidate for Vice President.
Ross Ulbricht himself said, โRoger Ver was there for me when I was down and needed help. Now Roger needs our support. No one should spend the rest of their life in prison over taxes. Let him pay the tax (if any) and be done with it. #FreeRogerโ
Dropping the Biden admin initiated case against Ver would not only be a popular move among libertarians, it is in line with the Trumpโs administrationโs own position on cryptocurrency.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche issued a memo on April 7, 2025, titled โEnding Regulation By Prosecution,โ significantly changing the Biden approach to cryptocurrency-related enforcement. The memo stated that the DOJ โis not a digital assets regulatorโ and criticized the Biden administrationโs approach as a โreckless strategy of regulation by prosecution.โ
President Trump himself promised to end what he called โJoe Bidenโs war on cryptoโ during his 2024 campaign.
