The Trump Administration has reportedly revoked the U.S. visas of Marina del Pilar รvila Olmeda, the sitting Governor of Baja California, Mexico and her husband, Carlos Torres Torres, a high-level political coordinator in Tijuana.
The announcement, made late Saturday night through Governor รvilaโs official Facebook account, revealed that her husbandโs visa was the first to be pulled, followed shortly by her own.
Carlos Torres, who serves as a coordinator of special projects for the Baja California state government and the city of Tijuana, insisted in a self-serving statement that the move was merely โan administrative measure,โ and denied any investigation or accusations.
โIn recent days I was notified by US Consular Authorities about the revocation of my non-immigrant visa, a measure that, as is with many people in similar contexts, responds to internal arrangements of the State Department.
It should be noted that my conscience is calm and I am sure that the situation will be resolved favorably.
Currently, the application of these administrative criteria has become increasingly common, and like so many others, I am included in that universe.
This procedure does not represent accusation, investigation or formal indication by any authority, neither in Mexico nor in the United States.
I have contacted an international immigration law specialist who is evaluating the submission of a motion to reopen or reconsider the decision, or begin the process for a new visa application, in strict adherence to official channels.
I make this information public with responsibility and transparency, not only to avoid speculation, but also to limit political opponentsโ misuse of this situation. Believe me: these are people without limits or scruples, willing to turn any fact into slander if they think it will give them an advantage.
Throughout my public life I have acted out of respect for the law and a fully aware of the commitment to serve. This situation will be handled with seriousness and confidence in legal procedures.
I reiterate the most important thing: there is no room for lies or opportunism among those who walk on the side of dignity.
I deeply regret that this situation has had consequences for my wife, Marina del Pilar, who โ despite not provoking anything โ has faced it with serenity, firmness and never losing the empathy that defines her.โ
รvila Olmeda, a close ally of Mexicoโs radical leftist president Andrรฉs Manuel Lรณpez Obrador, tried to spin the visa revocation as a mere technicality.
รvila Olmeda is a member of the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA), the same political party as former President Andrรฉs Manuel Lรณpez Obrador (AMLO) and current President Claudia Sheinbaum.
She also offered no official reason for the revocation in her post.
โThese days I have witnessed, once again, what love, integrity, and loyalty truly mean.
My husband, Carlos, has faced a situation, and as in every shared life, that circumstance has also reached me. Shortly after the consular measure was applied to him, I received a similar notification.
I am sure and fully trust that the situation will be clarified satisfactorily for both of us. I say this with absolute clarity: Carlos has always acted with integrity, dedication, and a deep commitment to Baja California.
My support for him isnโt just personal, itโs moral and political. Because I know who he is and because he has always stood up and taken responsibility for things that arenโt his.
I inform all citizens of Baja California that this situation is taking place in a complex binational context that requires my composure and prudence.
Iโve said it repeatedly: governing my state is a source of pride, and I will continue to do so with my heart in mind and a clear conscience.
My government will continue working tirelessly to address the challenges we face for the benefit of the people of Baja California.โ
But if รvila Olmeda was expecting sympathy, she got quite the opposite.
Mexican citizens โ fed up with cartel violence, economic decay, and government corruption โ took to social media to blast the governor.
One user offered a scathing assessment: โGovernor. Trumpโs message from the US is clear: โThere will be no exceptions for anyone; anyone who has had business dealings, transfers, or financial transactions with organized crime will be investigated.โ Itโs better to clear things up as soon as possible, donโt you think?โ
Another commentator mocked her travel restrictions: โLook on the bright side: now that you can no longer vacation in that neoliberal paradise, you can take time to visit dictatorial paradises like Cuba, Venezuela, or Nicaragua. Congratulations.โ
Their case is not isolated. On April 17, 2025, Matamoros Mayor Alberto Granados Fรกvila was detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the Brownsville Port of Entry.
Following his detention, the U.S. government revoked his visa due to alleged ties with the Gulf Cartel, a notorious drug trafficking organization that has historically operated in Matamoros.
Alberto Granados Fรกvila is also affiliated with the Morena Party.
