Trump Advisor Chris LaCivita Hits Daily Beast With Defamation Lawsuit for Claiming He Pocketed $22 Million From Campaign

Former Trump co-campaign manager Chris La Civita is suing The Daily Beast for defamation.

In a lawsuit against the left-wing media company, LaCivita accuses the outlet โ€œmaliciousโ€ and โ€œdamag[ing] reporting about him that showed a โ€œwith reckless disregard for the truth.โ€

His case refers to an article written and published by investigative reporter Michael Isikoff alleging that LaCivita made a staggering $22 million off the Trump campaign.

LaCivita maintains these funds were used for to pay for advertising and that he only made a fraction off that in political consultancy fees.

After the story went out, LaCivitaโ€™s lawyers sent a letter demanding the retraction of the story, citing publicly available campaign finance reports documenting his personal expenditures.

The Daily Beast amended the article to state that he actually made $19.2 million off the campaign and removed a podcast in which Isikoff discussed his findings.

However, the outlet has kept the story on its website and insisted they stand by their journalistโ€™s reporting.

โ€œDefendantโ€™s false statements created the false impression that Mr. LaCivita was charging exorbitant rates for his services and personally enriching himself at the expense of the campaign, thereby harming his reputation as an honest, reasonable, and ethical political operative,โ€ LaCivitaโ€™s lawsuit states.

โ€œAs a direct and proximate result of the publication of the defamatory statements, Mr. LaCivita has suffered special damages, including damage to his reputation and loss of business income,โ€ it continues.

The company responded by syaing that it โ€œstands by its reporting on Chris LaCivita.โ€

โ€œHis lawsuit is meritless and a transparent attempt to intimidate the Beast and silence the independent press,โ€ the outlet said in a statement.

โ€œThe Beast will defend itself vigorously and looks forward to following the money to confirm where every penny flowed in LaCivitaโ€™s LLC.โ€

LaCivita has not specified what he will be requesting in damages, with this likely to be determined at a later date.

Should he suceed in his lawsuit and receive a substantial amount in damages, it could potentially bankrupt the company altogether.

According to Axios, Trump was initially enraged by the story and demanded an explanation from LaCivita.

When LaCivita broke down the payments, Trump backed down and suggested that he file a lawsuit against the media outlet.

LaCivita will be represented by celebrity lawyer Mark Geragos, who has previously defended the likes of Chris Brown, Winona Ryder, Jussie Smollett and Colin Kaerpernick.
