Trump On Top: Biden’s Approval Plummets

The latest Washington Post/ABC News poll showing Donald Trump leading Joe Biden in a hypothetical 2024 matchup is undoubtedly a cause for concern for the Biden administration and the Democratic Party. The poll, which shows Trump leading Biden by six points, also highlights Biden’s dwindling approval rating, which has slipped to a new low of 36%.

The fact that Trump is leading Biden is not surprising, given the former president’s popularity among the Republican base. Trump is by far the favorite to take the Republican nomination, with 51% of Republicans surveyed indicating that they would like to see Trump run again in 2024. The poll also shows that 44% of American adults would vote for Trump in 2024, while only 38% would back Biden.

Biden’s low approval rating and lukewarm enthusiasm among his voters have played into Trump’s hands. The poll shows that 77% of independents who lean Democratic want to see the 80-year-old incumbent replaced at the helm of the party. Among registered Democrats, respondents are evenly split (47%-47%) on whether the party should nominate Biden or ‘someone other than Biden’ in 2024.

The poll’s findings also reveal that Trump’s handling of the economy continues to resonate with voters. 54% of voters think Trump did a better job of handling the US economy than Biden, while 36% think Biden has performed better during his presidency so far. This is significant, as the economy is often a top issue for voters, and Trump has long touted his economic achievements while in office.

However, the poll also highlighted potential stumbling blocks for Trump, with majorities saying that he should face charges for declaring the 2020 election fraudulent, mishandling classified documents, and his role in encouraging the January 6, 2021 riot on Capitol Hill. These findings suggest that Trump’s legal troubles may still be a significant obstacle to his political ambitions, especially if he decides to run again in 2024.

Furthermore, the poll also underscores doubts about Biden’s fitness to serve as president, with 63% of voters thinking that he lacks the mental sharpness to perform in the role, and 62% thinking that he is in too poor physical condition to serve effectively. These doubts have grown throughout Biden’s presidency, and videos showing the president stumbling through speeches and appearing visibly confused at events have only fueled these concerns.

In conclusion, while the poll’s findings are undoubtedly worrying for the Biden administration and the Democratic Party, it is important to note that the 2024 presidential election is still a long way off. Much can happen between now and then, including potential legal challenges for Trump and Biden’s administration having time to improve the president’s approval rating. As such, it is crucial to take these poll results with a grain of salt and to continue to closely monitor political developments in the coming months and years.
