US Settles Covid Vaccine Injury Claims With Tiny Payouts

TRUTH PUKE’S TAKE: According to government data, of the more than 8,000 people who have filed claims with the federal government alleging injuries from COVID-19 vaccines, only three have received cash payouts, totaling less than $5,000.

One person received $2,020 for an anaphylactic reaction from the government’s Countermeasures Injury Compensation Program (CICP), while two others received $1,583 and $1,033 for myocarditis, respectively.

CICP, which is a no-fault tribunal run by the Health Resources and Services Administration, is limited in the relief it can offer, with compensation restricted to unreimbursed medical expenses and lost wages. CICP’s payouts don’t include pain and suffering, punitive damages, or even the attorneys’ fees that usually come with medical lawsuits. The vaccine makers are indemnified by the government and are not party to CICP proceedings.

The vaccine injury lawyers avoid representing clients before the CICP, as the prospects of recovery are too slim to justify the expense. However, there may be a better way to handle these claims by moving them, with congressional support, to a more generous and well-established forum, the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, which already hears injury claims for 16 common vaccines. Vaccine makers are also shielded from liability in this program, but payouts are funded by a 75-cent tax per vaccine, with $4.9 billion awarded to plaintiffs since the program’s inception in 1988.
