Wikipedia Co-Founder Claims Intelligence Agencies Manipulate Online Encyclopedia

Larry Sanger, the co-founder of Wikipedia, has alleged that intelligence agencies, including the CIA and FBI, have been manipulating the content of the online encyclopedia for over a decade.

Speaking on journalist Glenn Greenwald’s ‘System Update’ podcast, Sanger expressed his concern about the platform becoming an instrument of control in the hands of the US liberal establishment and its intelligence allies.

Sanger revealed evidence dating back to 2008, indicating that CIA and FBI computers were used to edit Wikipedia entries, raising questions about their continued involvement in the site’s content.

The revelations of intelligence agency activity on Wikipedia first surfaced in 2007 when programming student Virgil Griffith created a program called WikiScanner, which traced the location of computers used to edit Wikipedia articles. The investigation uncovered that not only the CIA and FBI but also various large corporations and government agencies were involved in editing and scrubbing information from the online encyclopedia.

Wikipedia’s co-founder referred to these actions as “propaganda,” highlighting how the platform has turned into a playground for the manipulation of information by the rich and powerful.

Instances of CIA computer usage included removing casualty counts from the Iraq War and editing articles related to then Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, China’s nuclear program, and the Argentine navy. The FBI machine was used to remove aerial and satellite images of the US prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

Sanger expressed concerns about the intelligence agencies pushing their agendas by either influencing influential individuals or developing their own talent within the intelligence community to promote their narrative on Wikipedia.

He emphasized that a significant portion of intelligence and information warfare takes place online, with Wikipedia being a prominent battleground for influencing narratives.

These revelations are part of a larger trend of intelligence agencies’ involvement in shaping online content. Earlier this year, it was revealed that FBI and Ukrainian intelligence colluded to censor social media as a part of a broader effort by the US government to counter Russian influence online.

Furthermore, Elon Musk, the owner of X (formerly Twitter), revealed documents showing collaboration between the platform’s former executives and the FBI to suppress certain content. Additionally, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted that Facebook censored information damaging to President Joe Biden’s 2020 election campaign at the FBI’s request.
