A new ad campaign by concerned Democrats, urging President Biden to โpass the torch,โ will soon air on his favorite TV program, MSNBCโs โMorning Joe,โ as pressure mounts for him to step aside following poor debate performance and bleak polling figures.
An ad urging President Biden to step aside and โpass the torchโ will air on MSNBCโs โMorning Joeโโthe presidentโs favorite TV programโnext week.
A new group called Pass the Torch, comprised of concerned Democrats, plans to start running the ads in the Washington-area media market on Monday, NBC reported Friday. The coverage area includes the 81-year-old presidentโs Rehoboth Beach, Del., home, where he is recuperating after testing positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday.
โWe want to get this messageโthat weโre so grateful for all youโve done, and now itโs seriously time to pass the torchโdirectly to President Biden,โ Aaron Regunberg of Pass the Torchโs steering committee told the outlet.
โWeโll be going up on his favorite programs, and we plan to stay up until we hear the announcement that heโs going to do the right thing and step aside. Hopefully, weโll be able to take it off the air in the very near future.โ
The ad features seven Pennsylvania voters asking Biden to โpass the torchโ to avoid losing to former President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee.
โPlease, be the leader we know you are. Pass the torch,โ one person says.
โPresident Biden, you saved democracy in 2020,โ says another.
โNow you have a chance to do it again,โ adds the following speaker.
โOur countryโs future is in your hands,โ another voter declares.
Vice President Kamala Harris, 59, is widely seen as the most likely successor to Biden if he decides to retire, amid mounting calls from party leaders following his disastrous June 27 debate performance.
This week, reports indicated that former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) had privately briefed Biden on bleak polling figures suggesting a substantial loss to Trump, 78, possibly dooming down-ballot Democrats. Former President Barack Obama also reportedly confided in allies that he believes Biden should end his campaign.
